What Is Autism ?

About Autism

The developmental disabilities like Autism are lifelong neurobiological disabilities that affect the normal functioning of the brain. In case of Autism, each individual is different in all respect and majority are nonverbal, have no or less control on their hands, fists and fingers; hence cannot perform their basic functions of taking food, bath, wash and dressing. Persons with autism require lifelong help initially by parents and when parents are no more, by a trained, compassionate care giver. Even if parents set aside financial support to their best which is enough to take care of their son/ daughter, there is no guarantee that the child will get the same continuous help for his day to day requirements during the old age days of the parents and after the death of parents. Hence there is a necessity of non-government, charitable, a self-sustainable organization with holistic residential care facility run by group of parents and other likeminded professionals, domain experts and the individuals who are working for the cause.

While presently there are a number of such organisations, NGOs, institutions providing care and support for persons with developmental disabilities, the numbers of such persons are very much on higher side and majority are at home with parents / Guardians for want of suitable center for them.

Aalamara Foundation trying to cater to such needy persons.

Other Developmental Disabilities

Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy refers to a group of disorders that affect movement. It is a permanent, but not unchanging, physical disability caused by an injury to the developing brain, usually before birth. Cerebral palsy may only be mild and cause only a slight disruption to a person‟s daily life. It can also be more severe, affecting the whole body and may significantly impact how a person participates in daily activities. In addition to their motor disability, people with cerebral palsy may have other associated impairments including epilepsy, and disorders of speech, vision, hearing and/or intellect. In India, there are approximately 33,000 people with cerebral palsy. Worldwide, the incidence of cerebral palsy is 1 in 500 births. For most people with cerebral palsy, the cause is unknown. There is no known cure.

Mental Retardation

Mental retardation, manifesting before age 18, refers to a substantial limitations in present functioning, characterized by significantly sub-average intellectual functioning which exists concurrently with related limitations in two or more of the following adaptive skill areas: communication, selfcare, home living, social skills, community use, self direction, health and safety, functional academics, leisure and work. According to the World Health Organization the prevalence of mental retardation is 2-3% of the population.

Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis, or MS, is a long-lasting disease that can affect your brain, spinal cord, and the optic nerves in your eyes. It can cause problems with vision, balance, muscle control, and other basic body functions. MS is an autoimmune disease that affects the nervous system. Normally, antibodies produced by the immune system help protect the body against viruses, bacteria and other foreign substances. In people who have MS, the immune system destroys the substance that surrounds and protects your nerve cells – the myelin sheath. When myelin around nerves is damaged or destroyed, the nerves can’t function properly. The approximate prevalence of MS in India is around 8-9 people per 1,00,000.
